In the early morning hours of May 23, 2021, a violent incident unfolded at a local establishment in northeast Columbia, Missouri, known as The Vault. Boone County Sheriff's deputies were already present at the scene around 2:50 a.m., initially responding to a separate complaint regarding parking issues at the venue. While law enforcement officers were addressing the parking situation outside, they received urgent reports that a shooting had just occurred inside the bar.
Upon entering the facility to investigate the disturbance, deputies discovered a patron who had sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation.
The victim was identified as Junous Osha Kelly, a 24-year-old Black male resident of Columbia. Emergency responders immediately transported him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment, but despite the life-saving efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Boone County Sheriff's Office promptly classified the death as a homicide and launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, seeking to interview witnesses who were present at the nightclub during the chaotic moments when the shots were fired.
