On July 26, 2015, a violent incident unfolded during a birthday celebration in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Missouri. Antonio Hernandez, a 31-year-old Hispanic male, was in attendance at a residence located in the 400 block of Colorado Avenue, near Thompson Avenue. The gathering, which extended into the early morning hours, was disrupted when an altercation broke out among some of the guests.
The dispute escalated rapidly, leading to gunfire that struck multiple individuals at the scene.
Hernandez was one of two men fatally wounded during the shooting. He and another victim, 39-year-old Omero Garcia, succumbed to their injuries, while two other attendees survived gunshot wounds. Police officers responding to the report of shots fired shortly after midnight discovered the chaotic scene. Witnesses at the party were able to provide investigators with descriptions of the events, identifying a specific individual who had been involved in the confrontation prior to the shooting.
Authorities identified the primary suspect in the double homicide as 41-year-old Jose L. Yepes-Zavala. Following the investigation, Jackson County prosecutors charged Yepes-Zavala with two counts of second-degree murder, along with charges for armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. Despite the swift identification, the suspect was not immediately apprehended.
In December 2016, federal officials revealed that Yepes-Zavala had likely fled the country to avoid prosecution. Investigations, which included tracking the suspect's cellphone and gathering intelligence from informants, indicated that he had crossed the border into Mexico. Consequently, he was also charged in federal court with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, and a warrant was issued for his arrest as authorities continued their efforts to locate him.
