In the summer of 2022, a routine traffic stop on a quiet street in North Kansas City, Missouri, spiraled into a tragedy that would claim the life of a dedicated police officer. Daniel Vasquez, a 32-year-old officer with the North Kansas City Police Department, was shot and killed on July 19, 2022. Having served on the force for two years, Vasquez was described as a 'shining star' within his department.
On that Tuesday morning, at approximately 10:40 a.m., Officer Vasquez initiated a
traffic stop on a vehicle with an expired temporary tag near the intersection of 21st Avenue and Clay Street. As he approached the car, the driver, later identified as 24-year-old Joshua T. Rocha, exited his vehicle and opened fire on Officer Vasquez. Vasquez was struck by the gunfire and transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. This marked the first time a North Kansas City police officer was killed in the line of duty.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, prompting a manhunt. A few hours later, Joshua Rocha turned himself in to the Kansas City Police Department. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
The investigation and subsequent trial revealed the chilling details of the encounter. Dashcam footage showed Rocha shooting Vasquez multiple times with an AR-15 rifle. In a videotaped interview with detectives, Rocha calmly admitted to the shooting. During the trial, his defense attorney conceded that Rocha had murdered Officer Vasquez, leaving the jury to determine the degree of the crime. Prosecutors argued that the act was a deliberate ambush, stating that Rocha had made the decision to shoot Vasquez before the officer even reached his window. Rocha's defense pointed to his fear of losing his car, in which he sometimes slept, as a motive.
In October 2025, a jury found Joshua Rocha guilty of first-degree murder. Following the conviction, the jury recommended the death penalty. A judge formally sentenced Rocha to death for the murder of Officer Daniel Vasquez.
