On June 10, 2018, a violent tragedy unfolded in the Northland area of Kansas City, Missouri, specifically within the Thousand Oaks neighborhood near Parkville. Carl Deruyscher, a 66-year-old male, was attending a Sunday family dinner when the gathering turned deadly. He had recently married Sharmalee Pauling on May 26, just two weeks prior to the incident.
Both had been previously widowed and had found a new chapter of happiness together, but their union was cut short during the evening meal.
The violence was perpetrated by 50-year-old Douglas Pauling, the son of Sharmalee Pauling. According to reports, Douglas arrived at the residence armed with a long gun. The dinner guests included Carl, Sharmalee, Douglas’s ex-wife Margaret 'Maggie' Girard, and the 14-year-old daughter of Douglas and Margaret. As the events escalated, Douglas opened fire inside the home. His teenage daughter managed to escape the residence physically unharmed and frantically called 911, informing dispatchers that her father had a gun and had shot her grandmother.
Law enforcement officers from the Platte County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene, where a SWAT team eventually entered the home. Inside, they discovered four deceased adults. Investigators determined that Douglas Pauling had shot and killed his mother Sharmalee, his ex-wife Margaret, and Carl Deruyscher before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities classified the case as a quadruple murder-suicide. Because the suspect died at the scene, there were no arrests or trials, though police later noted that Douglas had reportedly struggled with bipolar disorder and had ceased taking his medication prior to the shooting.
