In the winter of 1978, a dark chapter unfolded in the life of 26-year-old Mary Beth Grismore, a white female known to her friends and family as 'Pixie.' She was in the midst of a new beginning, having recently remarried and planning a move from her home in Marshall, Indiana, back to her native Iowa to be with her new husband. On February 22, 1978, she was reported missing from her rural residence. There were no signs of a struggle or forced entry at her home, but Mary Beth and her car were gone. The last time anyone had seen her was in the early morning hours after a night out with her sister and friends in Terre Haute.
The search for Mary Beth stretched on for months, leaving her family in agonizing uncertainty. The grim answer to her disappearance came on May 3, 1978, in Whitehall, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. Police, investigating a report of an abandoned car at a Holiday Inn, discovered Mary Beth's vehicle in the parking lot. Inside the trunk, they found her badly decomposed body. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation. Investigators believed she had been killed shortly after she went missing. Her body had been wrapped in a towel and a blanket.
The discovery of Mary Beth's body across state lines prompted the involvement of the FBI, alongside Ohio and Indiana authorities. Fingerprints were found on the rearview mirror of her car, but this lead, like others, did not immediately break the case open. During the investigation, it was revealed that Mary Beth had been involved in an affair with her former supervisor at Turkey Run State Park, Patrick Ralston. Ralston, when questioned, also implicated a prominent Indiana politician, U.S. Senator Birch Bayh, alleging that Mary Beth had told him she had a sexual encounter with the senator. These allegations, however, were never substantiated, and no charges were ever filed in connection with them.
Decades have passed since Mary Beth Grismore's life was tragically cut short. Her murder remains an unsolved cold case. Despite several leads being established over the years, no arrests have ever been made, and no suspects have been officially named.
