In the hours before dawn on February 27, 2019, gunfire broke the quiet along the 2900 block of West 10th Place in Gary, Indiana, and officers raced in after a shots-fired call came in around 5:25 a.m. In the street they found Pamela Crider, 42, a white woman, down with a gunshot wound to the face—an attack so sudden and final that there was nothing left to do but secure the scene and begin the slow work of reconstructing what had happened in the darkness.
