On September 8, 2015, a violent tragedy unfolded at a residence in the 5900 block of East 84th Street in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the lives of three individuals. The primary victim was 17-year-old female Bianca Fletcher, who was found deceased inside the home alongside her 1-year-old son, Joseph, and her 18-year-old boyfriend, Shannon Rollins Jr. Police officers were dispatched to the scene around 9:25 p.m. following reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless bodies of the two teenagers and the infant, all of whom had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The gruesome discovery was reportedly made by a family member who ran to a neighbor for assistance.
Investigation into the triple homicide revealed that 22-year-old Joseph L. Nelson, Bianca's ex-boyfriend and the father of her child, had visited the home that evening. Witnesses reported that Nelson and Bianca became involved in a heated verbal altercation, during which she allegedly threw a diaper or a diaper box at him. Nelson later told investigators and witnesses that this action caused him to lose his temper. In a fit of rage, he drew a firearm and fatally shot Bianca. He subsequently turned the weapon on Shannon Rollins Jr. and his own infant son, Joseph. Nelson reportedly admitted to witnesses that he killed the other two to eliminate potential witnesses and because he did not want the baby's crying to alert neighbors.
Following the murders, Nelson attempted to cover his tracks. He collected shell casings from the scene, sold the murder weapon, and washed his hands with bleach to remove gunshot residue. Despite his efforts to conceal the crime, witnesses came forward with critical information. One individual told police that Nelson had confessed to the killings, stating he had 'done something bad' that he could not live with. Another witness described being present when Nelson disposed of clothing by burning it in a grill.
Joseph L. Nelson was arrested and initially charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, and one count of burglary. Prosecutors sought a high bond as the community grappled with the senseless nature of the crime, particularly the death of the one-year-old child. In January 2019, rather than facing a trial that could have resulted in a life sentence, Nelson accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and witness tampering. A judge subsequently sentenced him to 33 years in prison for the brutal slaying of Bianca Fletcher, their son, and Shannon Rollins Jr.
