On January 14, 1990, Patrolman John Joseph Kerr, aged 32, of the Union City Police Department in Pennsylvania, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Officer Kerr was shot and killed by one of three men he suspected of possessing drugs as he approached them. Despite being critically injured, Officer Kerr managed to return fire, killing the gunman before collapsing. His bravery and quick response undoubtedly saved lives, but it came at the ultimate cost.
