On September 10, 2015, a violent incident unfolded in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of an 18-year-old Black male named Cepeda Jackson Jr. Known affectionately as 'CJ' to his friends and family, Jackson was in the vicinity of a local business known as the Hot Spot market, located near the intersection of 24th Street and Brighton Avenue. Late that Thursday morning, around 11:30 a.m., the quiet of the neighborhood was shattered when a rapid series of six to eight gunshots rang out in an
alley adjacent to the store.
Severely wounded, Jackson managed to flee the immediate scene of the shooting, running into the grocery store in a desperate bid for help. Despite his efforts to reach safety, he collapsed inside the business. Emergency responders from the Kansas City Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter, but the injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The homicide investigation began immediately, with detectives canvassing the area for witnesses and reviewing security footage from the establishment.
The following day, a breakthrough in the case occurred when 18-year-old Jaire M. Fortune-Rhodes voluntarily presented himself at police headquarters, requesting to speak with detectives. During the subsequent interview, Fortune-Rhodes initially admitted only to being present at the scene when the violence occurred. However, investigators presented him with still images derived from surveillance video captured during the incident. Confronted with this evidence, he confessed to shooting Jackson.
Following his admission, authorities arrested Fortune-Rhodes and charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Prosecutors requested a cash-only bond set at $500,000, citing the gravity of the crime and the evidence collected, which included both the video footage and the suspect’s own statements. The swift arrest provided some answers to the grieving community and family, though it marked the beginning of the legal proceedings against the accused for the fatal shooting.
