In the early hours of October 10, 2015, in Kansas City, Missouri, 18-year-old Pablo Samyr Lopez was fatally shot outside a BP gas station in the 4800 block of Independence Avenue. Another man, 21-year-old Jorge L. Calderon-Ruiz, was also killed in the incident. Officers in the vicinity heard gunshots just after midnight and discovered the two men on the sidewalk in front of the convenience store entrance, both having sustained gunshot wounds.
Both Lopez and Calderon-Ruiz were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators utilized surveillance footage from the gas station which captured the homicides. The video showed the shooter firing multiple times at both victims, even after they were incapacitated and on the ground. In December 2015, charges were filed against two local teenagers in connection with the double homicide. Louie S. Guana, 18, of Kansas City, Missouri, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, and one count of first-degree assault.
A second teenager, 17-year-old Christopher Hamm Jr. of Kansas City, Kansas, faced charges of hindering the prosecution of a felony and tampering with physical evidence. Authorities alleged that Hamm drove the shooter away from the crime scene. A witness identified a vehicle known to be driven by Hamm leaving the scene, and a vehicle of the same type was later discovered burned in Kansas City, Kansas. At the time the charges were announced, both Guana and Hamm were still at large, and police sought public assistance in locating them. Prosecutors requested a bond of $500,000 for Guana and $100,000 for Hamm.
