A young woman's remains are discovered in a field two days after she vanished
In the late summer of 1981, the life of 21-year-old Darlene Russell was tragically cut short, leaving a shadow over Wayne County, Indiana, that lingers to this day. A Caucasian female known for her kind and trusting nature, Darlene was one of twelve siblings in a close-knit family. On the evening of September 19, 1981, she was seen socializing with friends at local establishments in Connersville, including Jerry's Bar and the Lamp Light Cafe. In the early morning hours of September 20, she returned home and informed her family of her intention to hitchhike to Kentucky to visit friends, a mode of travel not uncommon for her. This was the last time her family would see her alive.
Two days later, on September 22, 1981, a passing motorist along Fayette County Line Road in Wayne County made a grim discovery. A pair of blue jeans caught on a barbed-wire fence drew his attention, leading him to find Darlene's partially nude body nearby. An autopsy would later reveal the brutal nature of her death; she had sustained several blows to the head and a fatal knife wound to her neck. The forensic pathologist estimated she had been killed approximately two to three days before her body was found.
The investigation into Darlene Russell's murder was a joint effort involving the Indiana State Police, the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, and the Connersville Police Department.
