On the morning of July 30, 2016, a tragedy unfolded in a quiet residential neighborhood in Bridgeton, Missouri, when local law enforcement responded to a request for a welfare check at a home located in the 3600 block of Harmann Estates Court. Officers arrived at the scene around 11:40 a.m. and were forced to make entry into the dwelling, where they discovered a harrowing sight.
Inside the residence, four individuals were found deceased, marking the end of a violent event that had occurred behind the closed doors of the family home.
Among the victims was 50-year-old John M. Comer, a male resident of the home. Authorities located his body alongside those of his mother, 71-year-old Carole Comer, and his sister, 45-year-old Rebecca Comer Kelleher. Each victim had sustained fatal gunshot wounds, and a firearm was recovered at the scene by investigators. The Bridgeton Police Department immediately secured the area and launched an investigation to determine the sequence of events that led to the loss of four lives in what appeared to be an isolated domestic incident.
The subsequent investigation by the Bridgeton Police, in coordination with the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office, determined that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide. The identified suspect was the family patriarch, 73-year-old Thomas Patrick Comer. Detectives concluded that Thomas had fatally shot his wife, his son John, and his daughter Rebecca before turning the weapon on himself. Because the sole suspect died at the scene, there were no arrests made, nor were there any criminal charges filed or trials held in connection with the case. While a specific motive was never definitively established, later reports suggested that issues related to depression and paranoia may have been contributing factors to the patriarch's actions that day.
