On the evening of April 28, 2018, 37-year-old Leroy D. Allen was attending a large gathering at Matthews Park on Ayrshire Drive in Bridgeton, Missouri. The event, which included numerous attendees, was suddenly interrupted by gunfire around 6:00 p.m. When authorities from the Bridgeton Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered Allen inside the park suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other men, aged 42 and 39, also sustained injuries during the shooting; one was found in the park with non-life-threatening wounds, while the other later walked into a local emergency room for treatment.
The investigation, which involved the assistance of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, eventually revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence but a calculated assassination ordered by high-ranking members of the Gangster Disciples street gang. Federal authorities determined that the killing stemmed from a leadership dispute within the organization. Frank Smith, a national board member of the gang based in Naperville, Illinois, had issued a directive for 'extreme violence' to be carried out against a rival faction member to consolidate power. This order was communicated via a text message containing the phrase 'Mike Tyson Punch Out,' which gang members understood as a command to commit murder or severe physical assault.
In January 2021, a federal indictment named several individuals in connection with a widespread racketeering conspiracy that included Allen's murder. The investigation identified Sean Clemon and Dominque Maxwell, both from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, as the individuals who carried out the shooting on Smith's orders. Evidence presented during federal proceedings showed that Clemon and Maxwell traveled to the park in Bridgeton to execute the hit. Following the murder, both men were reportedly promoted to leadership positions within the gang as a reward for their actions.
The case proceeded to a federal trial where a jury heard evidence of the gang's structured hierarchy and its history of violence, including drug trafficking and witness tampering. In 2023, the primary figures responsible for Allen's death faced sentencing for their crimes. Frank Smith, who ordered the attack, was sentenced to life in prison. Sean Clemon and Dominque Maxwell were also convicted of racketeering conspiracy and murder in aid of racketeering, with both receiving sentences of life in federal prison in July 2023. The successful prosecution was part of a broader effort by federal law enforcement to dismantle the gang's leadership structure across multiple states.
