On November 5, 2016, a tragic series of events unfolded in Saint Louis, Missouri, resulting in the death of 4-year-old Owen Mathias Cadenbach. The young boy was caught in the midst of a volatile domestic situation involving his father, 43-year-old Christopher Cadenbach. In the days leading up to the incident, law enforcement in Franklin County had issued a warrant for Christopher’s arrest on charges of domestic violence in the first degree, stemming from allegations of abuse against his
estranged wife. The bond was set at $100,000 following reports that he had made life-threatening statements and exhibited erratic behavior.
During that Saturday, Christopher spent time with Owen and his 5-year-old brother, Ethan, taking them to visit their grandmother and a local park. However, his behavior became increasingly alarming to family members. He reportedly made comments to his mother indicating that he would not be taken alive and alluded to the concept of 'suicide by cop.' Concerned for the safety of the children, his mother contacted the authorities. This report, combined with the active warrant and the father's unstable demeanor, prompted the Missouri Highway Patrol to issue an Amber Alert around 6:30 p.m., notifying the public to be on the lookout for the man and his two sons in a dark grey Ford Focus.
The search came to a devastating conclusion later that evening at Cliff Cave County Park in south St. Louis County. Around 8:00 p.m., a park ranger spotted the suspect's vehicle parked in a lot after the park had closed. As law enforcement officers approached the car to investigate, they heard gunfire coming from inside the vehicle. Upon reaching the car, they discovered that Christopher Cadenbach had shot both Owen and Ethan before turning the weapon on himself. Despite the immediate response of emergency personnel who transported the children to a nearby hospital, Owen and his brother succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead.
The investigation identified Christopher Cadenbach as the sole perpetrator responsible for the deaths of his sons. Due to the suspect taking his own life at the scene, there were no subsequent arrests, trials, or convictions in connection with the case. The legal proceedings effectively ended with the death of the assailant, leaving the community and law enforcement to grapple with the finalized report of a double murder-suicide that claimed the lives of the two young boys.
