When he failed to arrive at his job, he was reported missing, sparking a search that would last for eight agonizing months. They contacted authorities and suggested looking at Kansas City International Airport, a place familiar to the family as his wife is a flight attendant.
Despite their pleas and the circulation of his information by Lenexa police, Potter's white work truck sat unnoticed in Economy Lot B at the airport. For months, as seasons changed, his family held onto hope, unaware that his body lay inside the vehicle just a short shuttle ride from the airport terminals. The breakthrough in the case came on September 12, 2017, not from a systematic search, but after a report of a foul odor emanating from a parked truck.
Inside the vehicle, police discovered a heavily decomposed body, which was later identified as Randall Wayne Potter. Investigators also found a gun belonging to him and a parking ticket dated January 17, the day he disappeared. His death was ultimately ruled a suicide.
