On February 4, 2017, a violent altercation took place at an apartment complex located in the 3400 block of Goodfellow Boulevard in St. Louis, Missouri, resulting in the tragic death of a bystander. The incident began with a domestic disturbance involving a man and a woman at the residence. 33-year-old Donald Marks, a male resident of St. Louis, was present at the complex during the unfolding chaos but was not the primary target of the initial dispute.
The situation escalated when Darren
L. Williams, also 33 years old, became involved in the conflict. Investigators reported that Williams punched the man who had been part of the earlier domestic argument. In reaction to the assault, the man who was struck retrieved a firearm and discharged a round at Williams. The bullet missed its intended target and instead struck Marks, inflicting a fatal injury.
Following the shooting, the individual who fired the weapon remained at the scene and was initially taken into custody by responding officers; however, warrants regarding his actions were taken under further consideration by the prosecutor's office at the time, leaving his legal status pending further review. Williams fled the location immediately after the gunfire but was apprehended by police later that week.
Authorities charged Williams in connection with the homicide, determining that his actions precipitated the deadly event. He faced counts of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and two counts of assault. He was subsequently held in jail on a $250,000 cash-only bond as the case proceeded through the legal system.
