On the night of July 9, 2017, a violent incident unfolded on the highways of Webster Groves, Missouri, claiming the life of 20-year-old Shamarcus McCullough. The events began around 10:14 p.m. as McCullough was traveling eastbound on Interstate 44 near the Big Bend Boulevard exit. He was in a vehicle accompanied by two other individuals when the situation rapidly escalated into a deadly encounter.
According to investigators, a second vehicle driving along the same stretch of the
interstate opened fire on McCullough's car. The gunfire struck the vehicle multiple times, causing it to veer off the roadway and come to a rest in a wooded area adjacent to the highway. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find McCullough suffering from critical gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The attack resulted in injuries to the other occupants of the vehicle as well. One passenger sustained gunshot wounds but survived, while a third individual suffered non-gunshot injuries, likely resulting from the vehicle crashing off the road. The Webster Groves Police Department immediately requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis to lead the homicide investigation, citing the complex nature of the highway shooting.
