On the afternoon of April 11, 2023, the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri, became the scene of a violent incident that claimed the life of 33-year-old Patrik' James. Just after 5:00 p.m., police officers who were already in the vicinity patrolling the area heard the sound of gunfire nearby. Responding rapidly to the noise, authorities discovered James lying on the pavement in the 2800 block of Gamble Street, the same block where he resided.
He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, officers observed a man in his 30s fleeing the area on foot, though they were unable to apprehend him at that moment. The investigation continued, eventually leading to the identification and arrest of a suspect, Kevin Larkin. Larkin was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with James’s death, facing the prospect of a trial in the St. Louis Circuit Court.
However, in October 2024, the case reached a legal resolution without a murder conviction. On the week his trial was set to begin, the 35-year-old Larkin entered a plea deal with prosecutors. Under the terms of the agreement, the charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action were dismissed. Instead, Larkin pleaded guilty to two counts of illegal possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to a total of 13 years in prison, with the court ordering a ten-year term for one count and a consecutive three-year term for the other.
