The incident occurred in the 1500 block of Leonaire Court, a residential area in North St. Louis County. Johnson was present at the location when he became engaged in a dispute with a resident of the street.

During the altercation, the homeowner, identified as 60-year-old Edward Meeks, produced a firearm and shot Johnson. Police officers responded to the scene of the shooting and found Johnson suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. despite the efforts of medical personnel, Johnson succumbed to his injuries several days later, passing away on August 30, 2019.
Law enforcement officers arrested Edward Meeks at the scene of the shooting. Initially, prosecutors charged Meeks with first-degree assault while Johnson was fighting for his life in the hospital.
