In the early morning hours of September 11, 2021, a domestic dispute in Wellston, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, ended in the tragic death of 30-year-old Arion Jimmelle Burse Sr. The incident unfolded around 3:50 a.m. at a residence in the 6200 block of Chatham Avenue. When officers from the North County Police Cooperative arrived at the scene, they discovered Arion Burse and a five-year-old child with gunshot wounds.
Burse was pronounced dead at the scene, while the child was transported to a hospital and fortunately survived the injuries.
The investigation, led by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, revealed a complex and volatile situation. Inside the residence at the time of the shooting were a man, his girlfriend, and her five-year-old child. Arion Burse, who was the child's father and the woman's ex-boyfriend, had forcibly entered the home. A gunfight erupted between Burse and the man inside the residence. Tragically, during the exchange of gunfire, Burse accidentally shot his own son.
Following the initial shooting, the other man in the residence shot and killed Arion Burse. After a thorough investigation and review of the evidence, the prosecutor's office determined that the shooter had acted in self-defense. As a result of this finding, no criminal charges were filed against the individual responsible for Burse's death. A person of interest was initially taken into custody, but the investigation ultimately concluded that the killing was justified under the circumstances.
