In the late hours of September 6, 2021, a night that began in celebration for 29-year-old Brandon Scott, a male resident of St. Louis, Missouri, ended in a fatal encounter that highlighted the city's struggles with violence. Scott was out celebrating the completion of his commercial driver's license classes when a minor traffic dispute escalated into a deadly shooting. He was seated in his Dodge Charger at a red light at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Second Street in downtown St.
Louis when a white Chevrolet Suburban pulled alongside his vehicle. From the Suburban, two arms extended, firing 14 shots from two different 9mm firearms into Scott's car. The shooting happened just before midnight.
After being struck multiple times, Scott's vehicle accelerated forward, crashing on a flight of stairs on the Gateway Arch grounds. Police were called to the scene at 11:57 p.m., where they found Scott inside his bullet-riddled car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was initially believed to be the result of a road rage incident after Scott accidentally turned the wrong way on Fourth Street. Brandon Scott was a father of two children, one of whom was only two months old at the time of his death.
The investigation into Brandon Scott’s death led to the arrests of two individuals, Jonathon Jones, 19, and Mark Perry, 38. Video surveillance played a crucial role in identifying the suspects and their vehicle, which was being driven by a woman associated with them. A jury found both Jones and Perry guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in July 2024. Perry, who was identified as a prior and persistent offender, was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Jones received a sentence of 22 and a half years. Jones was a juvenile at the time of the shooting and is also facing charges in the separate shooting death of 19-year-old JaDun Byrd in March 2022, which occurred after Jones had escaped from a juvenile detention center.
