On the evening of November 25, 2020, the night before Thanksgiving, a violent incident occurred in the Downtown West neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Deshuan Jackson, a 19-year-old male resident of the city, was in the 1400 block of 19th Street, the same block where he lived. Just before 6:00 p.m., shots were fired in the area, drawing the attention of local law enforcement.
Officers from the St.
Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene and discovered Jackson lying in the street, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The events marked a tragic start to the holiday season for the community, and homicide detectives immediately opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
In the aftermath of the killing, investigators identified a suspect they believed was responsible for Jackson's death. Police sought to bring charges of murder and robbery against this individual. However, when the case was presented to the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office in October 2021, prosecutors declined to file the charges. While the Circuit Attorney’s Office cited self-defense as a factor in other declined cases from that period, they did not immediately provide a public explanation for the refusal to prosecute the suspect in Jackson's death, leaving the case without a criminal conviction at that time.
