In the winter of 2018, the lives of a Missouri couple were tragically cut short in what began as a prearranged deal for cell phones. Igor Zhukov, a 47-year-old Caucasian male, and his partner, Michele Laws, aged 43, were reported missing after failing to return to their Olivette home on November 29, 2018. The couple, who had two daughters, had plans to take their children to piano and swimming practice that evening but never arrived.
Concern grew among family members who noted it was highly uncharacteristic for them to be out of contact.
The search for the missing couple came to a grim conclusion four days later, on December 3, 2018. Their bodies were discovered inside their car, which was found at the bottom of a secluded ravine in Riverview, near North Riverfront Park in St. Louis. Both Zhukov and Laws had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators from the St. Louis County Police and the Riverview Police Department treated the case as a double homicide, recovering four shell casings from within the vehicle.
The investigation into the deaths of Zhukov and Laws quickly led to a suspect. It was revealed that the couple had arranged to meet with 22-year-old Deonta Johnson on the day they disappeared. The purpose of the meeting was related to a deal involving cell phones, a business Zhukov was engaged in. However, the transaction turned violent when Johnson attempted to rob the couple.
Deonta Johnson was subsequently arrested and faced multiple felony charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of robbery. In a probable cause statement, Johnson admitted to his involvement in the robbery and the fatal shootings of both Igor Zhukov and Michele Laws. He was held without bond as the legal proceedings against him commenced, seeking justice for the violent and untimely deaths of the two parents.
