In the spring of 1907, the city of Saint-Louis, Missouri, would bear witness to a tragedy that would cut short the life of a dedicated public servant. Lemuel Boyce, a 32-year-old man, had made the difficult decision to leave the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. A widower with a young child to care for, he had weighed the risks of his profession and concluded that his duty to his family outweighed his commitment to the force.
