A warm summer evening in Kansas City, Missouri, turned tragic on Monday, June 25, 2018, when 15-year-old Demonte Walker was fatally shot. The violence that claimed his life also took his friend, 16-year-old Jeremiah Stewart. The two boys were in the 3600 block of Wabash Avenue when the sound of gunfire shattered the night. Responding officers discovered both teenagers suffering from gunshot wounds.
They were rushed to a nearby hospital, but their injuries proved to be fatal.
Demonte was known for his compassionate nature, especially his deep affection for his dog, Chops. He had reached out to a local spay and neuter clinic for assistance in caring for his pet, diligently mowing lawns to cover the costs of his companion's needs. He and Jeremiah were remembered as friends who shared a bond, having both been involved in a youth football program where they found mentorship and a positive outlet.
In the days following the double homicide, the community mourned the loss of two of its young members. Those who knew Demonte and Jeremiah, from clinic staff to football coaches, were left heartbroken by the senseless act of violence that cut their lives short. Despite the initial investigation and pleas from law enforcement for information from the public, the individual or individuals responsible for the deaths of Demonte Walker and Jeremiah Stewart have not been publicly identified, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the case. The shooter remains at large.
