On November 24, 2012, 16-year-old Gregory James Kuljian was with his family and girlfriend at Big Lagoon County Park in Humboldt County, California, when a tragic series of events led to his disappearance. The family's dog, Fran, was pulled into the ocean by a rogue wave while chasing a stick. Gregory entered the water to rescue the dog, and his father, Howard Kuljian, followed him in. Both were then swept into the surf while in calf-deep water.
Gregory's mother, Mary Scott, attempted to rescue her son and husband but was also pulled in by the powerful waves. Their daughter, Olivia Kuljian, then tried to save her mother and had to be rescued by a bystander. While the family dog, Fran, managed to return to shore unharmed, the rescue efforts for the family were devastating. Searchers recovered Mary's body from the water, and Howard's body was found on the beach. Despite an extensive search, there was no sign of Gregory.
Gregory James Kuljian is presumed to have drowned. At the time of his disappearance, he was a junior at Arcata High School, where he was involved in art, sailing, track, and cross country. He also had an interest in aeronautical engineering. A memorial service for Gregory and his parents was held on December 9, 2012, and the local community came together to support the orphaned sister, Olivia. The Humboldt County Sheriffs Department was the agency in charge of the case.
