On December 30, 2021, 21-year-old Hunter Nathaniel Lewis vanished off the coast of Humboldt County, California. An aerospace engineering student at California State University, Long Beach, Lewis was home in Blue Lake for the holidays. He was an avid and experienced outdoorsman, holding a pilot's license and scuba certification. On the day of his disappearance, he set out in his 15-foot green fiberglass canoe from Trinidad Harbor between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. His solo trip was the final step in an elaborate, multi-year treasure hunt he had meticulously designed for his friends and family. The treasure hunt, which involved complex clues and physical challenges like rappelling, was set to conclude on New Year's Eve.
Lewis was last seen paddling south from the harbor, presumably heading towards Flatiron Rock to hide the final clues or treasure. When he failed to return, the U.S. Coast Guard and Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies initiated a search. The official search was suspended after covering a vast area with no sign of Lewis. Tragically, the search effort transitioned from a rescue to a recovery mission.
A few days after he went missing, on January 1, 2022, a broken piece of his canoe washed ashore north of Elk Head. Subsequently, more debris from his canoe and a wooden bucket he was using for the treasure hunt were also found. It is speculated that his canoe may have wrecked on a shallow, rocky reef near Flatiron Rock that he was likely unaware of. The water was dangerously cold, and it is believed he was not wearing a wetsuit.
Despite extensive search efforts by authorities, family, friends, and hundreds of volunteers, Hunter Nathaniel Lewis has never been found. His family believes he did not survive in the cold water and considers the search a recovery effort for his body. A Facebook page was created to coordinate the volunteer search, with community members combing beaches and coastal areas. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office continues to have an open case for his disappearance.
