In the early morning hours of August 5, 2018, a violent tragedy struck the community of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of a passionate local activist. Shanterria Edwards, a 26-year-old Black female known to her friends and family as 'Shae,' was discovered fatally wounded in the 1300 block of East 89th Street. Before her untimely death, she had been a vocal advocate for workers' rights, serving as a leader with the organization Stand Up KC and campaigning for a higher minimum wage
across the state. Her dedication to social justice had taken her to rallies in St. Louis and the state capitol, making her a recognizable figure in the movement for equality.
The circumstances surrounding the incident were harrowing. Witnesses reported that Edwards was chased by an unidentified man as she attempted to flee toward her vehicle near the Legacy Apartment Complex. During the pursuit, she was shot in the back but managed to reach her car. In a final act of desperation, she dialed 911 to report that she had been shot, but by the time emergency responders arrived, she had succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation into the homicide proved difficult for local authorities, who struggled to identify the perpetrator immediately following the shooting. It was not until April 2020 that the Kansas City Police Department released surveillance footage in hopes of generating new leads. The video depicted a male suspect who had been loitering at the apartment complex for several hours prior to the murder. The individual was seen wearing dark shorts and a white T-shirt, which he later removed and wrapped around his head, seemingly to obscure his identity.
Despite the release of the footage and pleas from law enforcement for public assistance, no arrests have been reported in connection with the case. The search for the person responsible remains ongoing, leaving the homicide unsolved years after the fact. Police continued to urge anyone with information to contact the TIPS Hotline, hoping that a witness might eventually come forward to provide the necessary details to close the investigation and bring closure to those who knew the victim.
