Deron Ross, a 29-year-old Black male from Kansas City, Missouri, was fatally shot on March 14, 2019. The incident unfolded near the intersection of 53rd and Swope Parkway, where Ross was attempting to repair a disabled vehicle. An individual approached Ross and another person with him, complaining about the noise from their work. This initial complaint quickly escalated into a physical altercation. In the course of the struggle, shots were fired, and Ross sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Research Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to an 18-year-old suspect, Bryant A. Brown. A significant piece of evidence that aided in his identification was surveillance footage obtained from a nearby business. Eyewitnesses to the event stated that Ross was not in possession of a weapon at the time he was shot. Brown was later located and taken into custody at his father's home in Columbia, Missouri.
Following his apprehension, Bryant A. Brown was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action for his alleged role in Deron Ross's death. The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office requested that his bond be set at $250,000. The charges against Brown are accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
