On a summer evening in Kansas City, Missouri, a dispute tragically escalated, leading to the death of 31-year-old Charles Williams, an African American male. On July 21, 2017, police were dispatched to a residence in the 2500 block of Van Brunt Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m. following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Williams on the front porch, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations into the shooting revealed a confrontation had taken place. Witnesses reported that several individuals, including two men later identified as Felipe Reyna Jr. and Branden L. Hendren, had arrived at the residence. An argument ensued between Williams and members of the group. Though witnesses stated that Williams was animated, they maintained that he was not armed and made no threatening moves toward the individuals. The situation took a violent turn when shots were fired from both a shotgun and a handgun. After the volley of gunfire, the suspects fled the scene in their vehicles, leaving Williams fatally wounded.
The subsequent police investigation led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. In September 2018, Felipe Reyna Jr. was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Williams' death. A month later, Branden L. Hendren was also charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Court records revealed that Reyna admitted to shooting Williams with a shotgun, and also implicated Hendren in the shooting, stating that Hendren had fired a handgun at the victim.
Both men were ultimately convicted for their roles in the murder of Charles Williams. In November 2020, Branden L. Hendren pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Following his conviction, Felipe Reyna Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in April 2022 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The motive behind the deadly confrontation was reportedly a dispute over a pair of shoes that belonged to a female acquaintance of the perpetrators, an argument that tragically and senselessly ended a man's life.
