Stacey Reymond Witherspoon, a 47-year-old man, was fatally shot in south Kansas City on March 13, 2020. On that evening, police were called to the area of 71 Highway and Red Bridge Road where they discovered Witherspoon deceased outside a vehicle. He had been driving with three other people in the car when the shooting occurred.
According to a witness, an individual in the back seat of the vehicle shot Witherspoon.
Prior to the shooting, two other witnesses reported seeing the suspect at a residence holding and racking a gun. The investigation led police to identify Darick Neely, 47, as the suspect.
Evidence collected from the vehicle included 9 mm shells with a blue coating. A bullet with the same distinctive blue coating was recovered from Witherspoon's body. Ammunition with an identical blue coating was also found in Neely's possession. Following the investigation, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office charged Darick Neely with Murder in the Second Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Prosecutors requested a cash bond of $100,000.
