On October 17, 1981, John Sanderson was with some friends in Berens River, Manitoba. He left in a 22' boat heading for Jackhead, Manitoba. Friends tried to stop him from leaving due to the high winds but he left anyway. On October 19, 1981, the boat that he had taken was found upside down and partly submerged near the shore of Pigeon Point. Gas cans that had been in the boat were also located.
