On March 4, 2021, a devastating sequence of events unfolded at a residence in Florissant, a suburb within the St. Louis, Missouri, metropolitan area. The incident resulted in the death of 13-year-old Kayden Clarence James Johnson, a Black male, alongside his mother and younger sister. The tragedy began late that evening when the estranged husband of Kayden's mother forced his way into the family’s home on Lockwig Trail.
The intruder, identified as 35-year-old Bobby McCulley III, initiated a violent confrontation that would hold the family hostage inside their own residence for several hours.
The situation escalated as McCulley, who had a documented history of domestic violence and was facing pending divorce proceedings, targeted the family. Inside the home, he fatally shot Kayden, his 34-year-old mother Roseann Williams McCulley, and his 6-year-old sister Kaylee Brooks. The attack was described by investigators as methodically planned, with the assailant reportedly arriving with the specific intent to kill. Following the shootings, McCulley abducted the couple's one-year-old daughter, fleeing the scene and triggering a frantic search by law enforcement.
An Amber Alert was immediately issued for the surviving infant, mobilizing police across the region. The child was eventually found unharmed after being dropped off with relatives. As the manhunt for McCulley intensified, St. Louis County prosecutors filed charges against him, including three counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and armed criminal action. However, the pursuit ended grimly; police tracked McCulley to a location where he was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, effectively ending the possibility of a trial.
Although the suspect was never brought to court due to his suicide, the investigation confirmed his sole responsibility for the triple homicide. Authorities revealed that in the weeks leading up to the murders, McCulley had subjected the family to a pattern of abuse and harassment, which had prompted Roseann to seek a divorce. The case was officially closed as a murder-suicide, leaving the community to mourn the loss of Kayden and his family members, whose lives were cut short in an act of domestic terror.
