The evening of June 1, 2023, turned violent in the Downtown West neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, when gunfire erupted near a public landmark. Just before 9:00 p.m., first responders were called to the 1200 block of Chestnut Street, specifically to Poelker Park. There, near the Firefighters Memorial Statue, authorities discovered 32-year-old Derick Conley lying on the ground. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Conley was a resident of the 1000 block of 66th Street in nearby University City.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, homicide detectives launched an investigation to identify the person responsible for the slaying. Police eventually took a 37-year-old man into custody in connection with Conley's death. Investigators applied for murder charges against this individual, believing they had identified the shooter.
However, the legal proceedings took a turn when the case was presented to the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors determined that the initial evidence was insufficient to secure a charge at that time and requested further investigation into the incident. Consequently, the 37-year-old suspect was released from custody after being held for 24 hours, as no formal charges were filed within the mandatory timeframe. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Conley’s death continued as authorities sought additional evidence.
