In the summer of 2019, a life was tragically cut short in a Kansas City, Missouri park. Destiny Dawn Brooks, a 33-year-old female, was fatally shot on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, near 11th and Prospect Avenue. The incident, which unfolded in the afternoon, left the community shaken and a family mourning the loss of a mother of four.
On that fateful day, Kansas City police officers were dispatched to the park around 2:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Destiny Brooks suffering from multiple gunshot wounds near the playground area. She was transported to Truman Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased. The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office later officially ruled her death a homicide. Investigators at the scene recovered several. 380 shell casings, indicating the type of weapon used in the altercation.
Eyewitnesses at the park provided crucial information to the police, recounting a physical altercation between the victim and two other women moments before the fatal shots were fired. Witnesses reported seeing one of the women, later identified as 29-year-old Sabria S. Nixon, pull a handgun from her purse and begin shooting at Brooks. Following the shooting, the two women were seen fleeing the park.
Based on witness statements, police were able to quickly identify and locate Sabria Nixon. She was taken into custody along with another woman for questioning. During her interview with detectives, Nixon admitted to being in a physical altercation with Brooks and confirmed that she was angry when she fired the handgun she had in her purse.
The day after the shooting, on June 5, 2019, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office announced that Sabria S. Nixon had been charged in connection with Destiny Brooks' death. The charges filed against her included second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Prosecutors requested a bond of $300,000 for Nixon.
