In the early morning hours of October 1st, 2023, the quiet of a Flagstaff neighborhood was broken by a grim discovery. Jason Maloney, a male resident, was found deceased in his truck parked in the 1900 block of East Sixth Avenue. The nature of his injuries immediately led Flagstaff Police to investigate his death as a homicide, and a search for answers and a suspect began.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on Darren Ayzie as an investigative lead.
Authorities cautioned the public that Ayzie was to be considered armed and dangerous, elevating the urgency of his capture. The search for Ayzie culminated on the evening of October 5th, when he was located at a residence in the 400 block of South Leroux. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshal's violent offender fugitive task force, Flagstaff Police took Ayzie into custody without incident. He was subsequently booked into the Coconino County Jail on charges of second-degree murder and misconduct involving weapons.
As the legal process unfolded, Darren Ayzie initially faced the serious charge of murder for his connection to Jason Maloney's death. However, in a development occurring in the summer of 2024, Ayzie entered into a plea agreement. The second-degree murder charge was amended to manslaughter, and he pleaded guilty.
