On the evening of November 26, 2019, tragedy struck a residence in the 3000 block of Cypress Avenue on the east side of Kansas City, Missouri. Officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the home around 7:15 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene that began on the sidewalk outside the property, where a male victim was suffering from gunshot wounds to his face.
Before being rushed to the hospital, the wounded man managed to convey a harrowing message to the first responders, stating that his mother was dead inside the house and identifying the shooter by the name 'Johnny.'
Inside the residence, police located the body of 52-year-old Evelyn Frazier, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a violent end to the night’s disturbances. The initial investigation revealed that the intrusion began when the male survivor arrived at the home and locked the front door, only for the assailant to force his way inside shortly thereafter. The intruder shot the man in the face, causing him to fall to the floor where he played dead in a desperate attempt to survive. From this vantage point, he heard the gunman interrogate Evelyn about the location of certain items. When she replied that there was nothing in the house, the intruder fired two additional shots, killing her.
Detectives quickly identified the suspect as 28-year-old Jonathan D. Campbell, an acquaintance of the surviving victim who had previously served jail time with him and communicated via social media. Following the shooting, Campbell allegedly ransacked the home, stealing two cellphones and a necklace before fleeing the scene. In December 2019, Jackson County prosecutors charged Campbell with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, and three counts of armed criminal action in connection with the deadly home invasion.
