In the early morning hours of July 6, 2019, the quiet of a Kansas City, Missouri apartment complex parking lot was broken by the discovery of a grim scene. A security guard on patrol in the 3900 block of Topping Avenue came across a vehicle with an unresponsive man inside. The man, later identified as 30-year-old Gregory Payton Jr., a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, had been shot. Emergency medical services were called to the scene, but it was too late; Payton was pronounced dead.
