On a Saturday morning, October 12, 2019, Oscar Molina, a 42-year-old male, was at the Jubilee Market gas station at East 24th Street and Hardesty Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, simply trying to refuel his vehicle. His life was abruptly cut short when he was fatally shot while still inside his car. Kansas City police officers responded to a call at 9:33 a.m. and found Mr. Molina at one of the pumps with a gunshot wound; he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
His death marked the 117th homicide in the city that year.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify 36-year-old Gilberto Barron-Aguilar as the suspect. Crucial evidence came from the gas station's surveillance footage, which captured a black Nissan Xterra at the location before and shortly after the incident. The video showed Barron-Aguilar getting out of the Xterra and confronting Molina before the fatal shot was fired. A witness who was in the vehicle with Molina later told investigators that Barron-Aguilar had pointed a gun at Molina, demanding he 'get into the truck now' or be shot. This confrontation ultimately led to the shooting.
Following the incident, detectives located the black Nissan Xterra at East 29th Street and Topping Avenue. Based on the evidence gathered from the surveillance video and witness statements, Gilberto Barron-Aguilar was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Oscar Molina's death.
