In the fall of 2019, the community of Columbia, Missouri, was shaken by the tragic and premature death of Dajion Harris, a 13-year-old African American boy known for his happy demeanor and love for sports. A student at Oakland Middle School who had previously attended Benton Elementary, Dajion was remembered by friends and family for his sense of humor and 'goofiness.' On the weekend of the incident, specifically on Saturday, October 19, 2019, Dajion was at a residence on Rice Road in Columbia.
It was there, amidst a gathering of individuals, that a dangerous situation involving firearms unfolded, leading to a fatal outcome.
The events of that night culminated in Dajion sustaining a gunshot wound that would claim his life on October 20, 2019. Law enforcement investigation revealed that the teenager was in the company of 19-year-old Cameron White. According to probable cause statements and later court proceedings, the two were handling firearms while reportedly under the influence of drugs. White later claimed to authorities that Dajion had asked him to shoot him during this period of reckless activity. The shooting occurred inside the home, and despite the immediate gravity of the situation, the young boy could not be saved.
Police arrested Cameron White shortly after the shooting. He was found in a nearby apartment and, upon being detained, reportedly made statements indicating he believed he would never see his family again. Prosecutors initially charged White with second-degree murder, alleging that his actions directly caused the death of the 13-year-old. The case highlighted the severe dangers associated with the mishandling of weapons and the devastating impact of such negligence on families and the broader community.
As the legal process moved forward, the charges against White were eventually modified. In a plea agreement reached in early 2021, White pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action, rather than proceeding to trial on the murder charge. In February 2021, a judge sentenced him to ten years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. The conclusion of the legal case brought a formal end to the proceedings, but the loss of Dajion Harris remained a profound sorrow for his surviving relatives and the Columbia community.
