On December 23, 2019, Destiny Gray, a 20-year-old Black female, was found shot to death in the Penrose neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Police officers responded to a call early that Monday morning, arriving at the 4000 block of Cora Avenue shortly after midnight. Upon arrival, they discovered Gray on the front porch of a residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.
Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
Following the shooting, homicide detectives took a 22-year-old male suspect into custody and recovered a firearm at the scene as evidence. While the man was detained immediately after the incident, he was not publicly identified by law enforcement at the time. The investigation was handled by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Division, which initially withheld the suspect’s name pending the application of formal charges.
Despite the initial arrest, the case did not result in a murder conviction. In the months following Gray's death, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office determined that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with criminal charges, citing that the police investigation had classified the incident as a 'justified shooting.' This decision sparked public outrage from the victim's family, specifically her mother, Le’Jon Gray, who participated in protests and political advertisements criticizing local prosecutors for failing to secure justice for her daughter.
