On Christmas Eve in 2019, a violent incident unfolded in the southern part of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 23-year-old Carter McCollum. The events leading to his death began late in the evening when McCollum and his girlfriend drove to a location near 69th Terrace and Olive Street. Investigators later determined that the meeting was arranged for the purpose of a narcotics transaction involving opioids.
McCollum was seated in the front passenger seat of a Toyota Prius driven by his girlfriend when the other party arrived.
According to witness statements provided to the Kansas City Police Department, a man emerged from a nearby residence and initially entered the back seat of the vehicle to conduct the exchange. At some point during the interaction, the situation deteriorated rapidly; the man became agitated, exited the vehicle, and began firing a weapon into the car from the outside. The gunfire shattered the rear passenger window and struck McCollum. His girlfriend immediately drove away from the scene in a panic, eventually stopping near 72nd Street and Wabash Avenue to summon emergency assistance.
When police officers arrived at the secondary location around 11:30 p.m., they found McCollum lying on the street near the vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite emergency response efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Investigators processed the scene at 69th and Olive, recovering multiple. 45-caliber shell casings and broken glass that corroborated the witness's account. A review of McCollum's cellphone records revealed text messages and calls exchanged with a specific number just prior to the shooting, which helped authorities identify a suspect.
In early January 2020, prosecutors in Jackson County charged 36-year-old Joseph A. Kane with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with McCollum's death. The victim's girlfriend identified Kane as the shooter from a photo lineup. Kane was subsequently located and taken into custody on January 6 outside a hotel in Overland Park, Kansas. Following his arrest, he was held on a $250,000 bond while awaiting court proceedings regarding the fatal shooting.
