On June 21, 2020, 22-year-old Marcus D. Stone was shot and killed in Kansas City, Missouri. The incident occurred in the early morning hours, around 1:45 a.m., in a parking lot near the historic 18th and Vine district. Police officers responded to the scene following reports of a shooting and discovered Stone, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Witnesses and family members recounted that Stone was attending a gathering in the area when the violence erupted.
According to his brother, Keshawn Stone, Marcus was leaving the party when shots rang out. In his final moments, Stone reportedly acted to protect those around him, instructing his friends to run for safety while he attempted to shield them from the gunfire. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. A second victim injured in the same shooting was transported to a hospital by a private vehicle.
Stone, a graduate of Ruskin High School and an employee at Hy-Vee, left behind a young daughter named Amiyah. His mother, Salina Robinson, and other family members held a vigil in the days following the tragedy, describing him as a kind-hearted 'protector' who did not deserve such a violent end. Robinson publicly pleaded for the violence to stop and for the community to learn how to resolve conflicts without weapons.
As of September 2020, the Kansas City Police Department had not announced any arrests or identified specific suspects in connection with Stone's murder. The investigation remained open, with family members expressing hope that the case would eventually be solved, though no charges had been filed at that time.
