On the afternoon of June 22, 2020, Paul Guadalupe 'Pappy' Garcia, a 50-year-old male, was at a residence located near the intersection of 16th Street and Elmwood Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. The situation turned violent around 5:15 p.m. when shots rang out from the street. Although multiple people were gathered outside the home at the time of the disturbance, the gunfire was directed toward the house itself, striking Garcia who was situated inside the residence.
Witnesses at the
scene later described the events to investigators, reporting that they observed two or three male suspects outside the home firing weapons from the street level toward the dwelling. Following the barrage of gunfire, the individuals were seen entering a silver or white four-door sedan. The vehicle then sped away from the scene, fleeing toward the west side of the area before law enforcement could arrive.
Emergency responders transported Garcia to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, but he ultimately succumbed to the gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead. Police officers and crime scene personnel remained at the location into the evening, canvassing the neighborhood for potential witnesses and collecting evidence, including shell casings found on the street. At the time of the initial investigation, no specific individuals had been taken into custody, and detectives appealed to the public for any information regarding the identity of the shooters or the getaway vehicle.
