On the evening of August 8, 2020, police in Kansas City, Missouri, were dispatched to a residence in the 11200 block of East 47th Terrace following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers encountered a chaotic scene in the backyard of the home near 47th and Sterling. A man walking in the yard directed the responding officers to the bodies of two individuals who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
One of the victims was identified as 68-year-old Arlin Jones, a male whose life was claimed alongside 59-year-old Kenneth Hanan.
Investigation revealed that the violence began when a man named Kevin McClanahan arrived at the residence carrying both a handgun and a rifle wrapped in a blanket. Witnesses reported that McClanahan appeared visibly agitated upon his arrival. Despite efforts by those present to calm him, the situation escalated rapidly. McClanahan allegedly opened fire, shooting Arlin Jones multiple times with the handgun. Moments later, as Kenneth Hanan walked up the driveway, he was also targeted and shot with the rifle. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Law enforcement officers quickly detained McClanahan, who was still at the location when they arrived. A search of the backyard recovered two firearms and numerous 9mm shell casings consistent with the witness accounts. Following his arrest, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office charged the 40-year-old white male suspect with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. During questioning, McClanahan claimed he had come to the house to deliver guns and was in the basement when he heard shots, though this account was contradicted by witness testimony identifying him as the shooter.
