On March 4, 2021, a devastating series of events unfolded in a residence on Lockwig Trail near Florissant, Missouri, claiming the life of Kayden Clarence James Johnson. The 13-year-old Black male was at home with his mother, Roseann McCulley, and his younger sister, Kaylee Brooks, when the safety of their household was breached. Bobby McCulley III, who was the estranged husband of Kayden's mother, forced his way into the home and initiated a terrifying sequence that would end in a triple
homicide. For several hours, the intruder held the family hostage inside their own residence, creating a tense and fearful atmosphere before he ultimately opened fire on the captives.
The violent encounter resulted in the deaths of Kayden, his mother, and his 6-year-old sister, leaving the community and remaining family members in shock. Following the shootings, the perpetrator fled the scene, taking with him the couple's 1-year-old daughter. This abduction triggered an immediate Amber Alert as law enforcement agencies across the St. Louis area mobilized to locate the armed suspect and the missing infant. The urgency of the manhunt was compounded by the knowledge that McCulley had just committed a brutal crime and was potentially volatile.
As investigators pieced together the timeline, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office formally filed charges against McCulley, issuing at-large warrants for three counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and armed criminal action. The search intensified, leading police to the suspect's location shortly after the murders. However, before officers could take him into custody, McCulley turned his weapon on himself, committing suicide and ending the pursuit without a trial. The abducted infant was subsequently found safe and unharmed, having been dropped off with relatives, surviving the tragedy that claimed the rest of her immediate family.
