In his pursuit of this dream, he had recently moved to the St. Louis area in March 2021, seeking new opportunities.
On that Thursday evening, just before 11 p.m., police responded to a call in the 1200 block of Peggy Court in the Baden neighborhood. They discovered Newman inside his vehicle with a gunshot wound to his torso. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he died at the scene. It was a tragic end to his journey, cutting short the aspirations he held for his family. At the time of the shooting, it was unclear whether he was in the process of picking up or dropping off a passenger for the ride-hailing service.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence quickly led detectives to a suspect. Authorities identified 17-year-old Torian Wilson as a person of interest after connecting his email address to a series of recent carjackings involving ride-hailing company drivers in the area. Police were able to trace Wilson's phone, and upon apprehending him, they found a handgun in his possession. Ballistic tests confirmed that a bullet casing found at the scene of Newman's death matched the weapon found with Wilson. During questioning, Wilson admitted to having been at the scene of the shooting.
Following the investigation, Torian Wilson was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of Elijah Newman.
