The death of Rashard Cortez Lovelace marked a tragic end to a tumultuous week for the 31-year-old St. Louis Metropolitan Police officer. Born in St. Louis and a veteran of the United States Navy, Rashard had joined the police force in November 2018. He was known to his community as a father of three daughters and a husband, but his life unraveled rapidly in late April 2021.
Following an investigation into allegations of domestic abuse, he found himself on the other side of the law, facing serious criminal charges that threatened his career and freedom.
Prosecutors charged Rashard with four counts of fourth-degree domestic assault just days before he died. The charges stemmed from incidents alleged to have occurred between July and August 2020 involving a female police officer with whom he had been in a relationship. Court documents accused him of punching the woman in the chest and aggressively placing his hands around her neck on multiple occasions while they were both on duty. At least four other officers provided witness testimony regarding the abuse. He was arrested and initially held without bond, though a judge later released him on his own recognizance with strict orders to stay away from the victim.
On the morning of May 1, 2021, officers from the very department Rashard served received a call for a shooting in the 4100 block of Walsh Street in south St. Louis. When first responders arrived at the scene around 11:30 a.m., they discovered the Black male deceased in the yard of his home. Witnesses, including neighbors who attempted to render aid, reported seeing family members in distress before police arrived. The initial investigation by the Force Investigation Unit determined that he had suffered a fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Because the death was ruled a suicide, law enforcement did not seek any suspects in connection with the shooting, and no arrests were made regarding his death. The legal proceedings against Rashard were subsequently dismissed due to his passing. His death occurred less than a year after his family had suffered another loss, as his brother had been murdered in a separate incident in 2020. Rashard was laid to rest following a full police detail funeral at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.
