In the summer of 2021, a young man's life was abruptly cut short on the streets of St. Louis, Missouri. Jonathan Rubio 'Johnny' Cruz, a 19-year-old Hispanic/Latino male, was fatally shot on the evening of July 19th. The incident unfolded around 7:45 p.m. near the intersection of Cherokee Street and Minnesota Avenue, a typically vibrant area in the southern part of the city.
Cruz was reportedly sitting in a car outside a local barbershop when the sound of gunfire shattered the evening calm.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Cruz unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The tragic event marked the 103rd homicide in the city that year, leaving a family and community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss. The investigation led to the identification of a suspect, Neptali Mejia, who was 18 years old at the time of the shooting. In March 2024, the case reached a pivotal moment in the legal process. Neptali Mejia appeared in court and entered into a plea agreement. The initial first-degree murder charge was reduced, and Mejia pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. As a result of the plea deal, he was sentenced to an eight-year prison term.
