In the early morning hours of July 7, 2023, a violent encounter at a gas station in the Dutchtown neighborhood of St. Louis tragically ended the life of 52-year-old Jametric Steele. The male victim was discovered by police just after 4 a.m. at the QuikTrip located at the intersection of Gravois Avenue and Chippewa Street, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Surveillance footage from the scene captured the events that led to Steele's death.
The video showed another man, Mohamed Abdi, in a confrontation with someone outside the convenience store. Abdi then turned his attention to Steele, shooting him at close range. Steele attempted to flee and take cover behind parked vehicles but ultimately collapsed from the severity of his injury. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators described the suspect as wearing a black t-shirt with orange print and a baseball cap on backward at the time of the shooting. The investigation led to the arrest of 45-year-old Mohamed Abdi. On August 25, 2025, the day his trial was scheduled to begin, Abdi pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the killing of Jametric Alfonzo Steele. He was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, bringing a measure of accountability for the senseless act of violence.
